Ecuador: Forest Fire Affects Some 120 Hectares in Azuay Province

On Thursday, a major forest fire in the Ecuadorian province of Azuay today left some 120 hectares affected in the towns of Girón and Santa Isabel, in the southeast of that jurisdiction.

The National Secretary of Risks, Jorge Carrillo, reports on the forest fire registered in the Girón canton, Pichanillas sector of the province of Azuay.
According to the Secretariat of Risk Management (SGR), so far no homes have been affected but the fire is still active.

The mayor of Cuenca, Cristian Zamora, explained that they are present in the area of the scourge of great proportions.
According to media reports, the authorities there have activated the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), while fire brigades from three cities are intervening.
The disaster is occurring at the height of the summer season, when the heat indexes increase considerably.
The SGR specialists explained that at this time of the year, the provinces of the Sierra and the south of the Litoral in this South American nation will be exposed to a greater threat due to high temperatures, low humidity content in the atmosphere, low cloud cover, as well as increased wind speed and ultraviolet radiation.
